Healthy habits can lower the risk of several cancers, but no routine can guarantee a cancer-free life. Prevention works best when daily choices are paired with recommended vaccines, screening and timely medical advice.

Build a protective plate: aim for a pattern rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, pulses, beans and nuts. Limit processed meats, keep red meat modest, and choose water over sugary drinks more often. Maintain a weight that is healthy for you through sustainable food choices and activity.

Move regularly: brisk walking, cycling, swimming, strength work, yoga or any activity you enjoy can help make movement a lasting habit. Break up long periods of sitting and start at a pace that feels realistic.

Avoid tobacco in every form and protect others from second-hand smoke. Tobacco remains the most important preventable cause of cancer. Alcohol also increases the risk of several cancers, so avoiding it or cutting down can lower risk.

Protect your skin from excessive ultraviolet exposure, follow workplace safety advice, and discuss HPV and hepatitis B vaccination where appropriate. Take part in age- and risk-appropriate screening programmes; screening can find some cancers early and can prevent certain cancers by detecting precancerous changes.

Speak with your doctor about your personal and family history, especially if you notice persistent new symptoms. Small, consistent choices are meaningful - and evidence-based prevention is a shared commitment between individuals, families and health systems.
